Kiwi jam with a hint of lime
This is my first ever batch of homemade jam! I’m so impressed with myself – feel like a domestic goddess. Making jam from scratch has always seemed a bit scary (I seem to say this a lot, I think I must be easily intimidated) – I’ve always had visions of bubbling sugar, burnt pans, and, inevitably, me with hot jam tipped all down my front (not particularly goddessy).
But I was recently sent the Ball FreshTech Jam and Jelly Maker to try out, so I figured I’d better give it a go. Turns out, this machine makes homemade jam super easy! Some may call it cheating; I call it acceptance of my own incompetence.
I actually don’t like kiwi fruit. I used to like them years ago, but I had a bad one as a kid and it put me off for life (apparently I’m also easily traumatised; it’s a wonder how I get through the day). You may think this sounds strange coming from someone who’s sharing a recipe for lime and kiwi jam, and you’d be completely right.
I’m not quite sure what possessed me to make kiwi jam given my dislike of kiwis, but I wanted to make something a bit unusual, so when I saw this recipe in the little cookbook that came with the jam maker, it grabbed me immediately.
Luckily, when you add a ton of sugar to even your least favourite fruit and turn it into jam, it becomes unbelievably delicious. Eat it straight from the jar with a spoon kind of delicious (not that I did that, of course). The hint of lime adds such a fab tanginess, and kiwi fruit actually has a really lovely flavour once you repress your childhood trauma.
The Ball jam maker made this kiwi jam really easy to make. Add your chopped fruit to the bowl with some pectin and sugar, and the machine does everything else for you! It even beeps when it’s done, so you know it’s time to put the bottle of wine down, get out of the bath, and transfer the jam into jars. The most labour-intensive part of the process was peeling all those bloomin’ kiwis. It was worth it in the end, but I think next time I might opt for raspberries or something that requires a bit less faff!
This recipe makes a really decent batch – about 4 jars. If you’re a preserving pro, you can keep it for up to a year – otherwise, just transfer it into jars and store in the fridge for up to 3 weeks. I am very, very much looking forward to slathering this on toast for my breakfasts over the next few weeks, or dolloping it on yogurt! Yum.
Since the lovely people at Ball are so generous, they’re offering one of you guys the chance to win your very own jam and jelly maker! Just use the Rafflecopter widget below to enter for your chance to win (UK only please, sorry international friends).

Kiwi jam with a hint of lime (and a giveaway!)
Ingredients
- 1 kg kiwi fruit (around 15 kiwis)
- 3 tbsp Ball jam setting mix with pectin
- 660 g caster sugar (~ 3 cups)
- 1 tsp finely grated lime zest
Instructions
- Peel the kiwis, and chop them fairly small. Place into the Ball jam maker with the pectin, and press the 'jam' button. Allow the paddle to toss the fruit and pectin over the heat for 4 minutes. When the machine beeps, add the caster sugar and lime zest, and allow to cook for the remaining 17 minutes.
- When the jam is ready, turn the machine off and immediately transfer the jam to pre-heated jars. Seal tightly and store in the fridge for up to 3 weeks. Alternatively, you can freeze the jam, or preserve it to store long-term.
Note: Nutritional information is approximate, and will depend on exactly what ingredients you choose.

No that sounds delicious!! Love blueberries.
I have lots of rhubarb growing in the garden, but also a surplus of horseradish – but no i will not put the two together – rhubarb and ginger maybe?
Haha, I’m not sure horseradish jam sounds nice but rhubarb and ginger sounds good! ;)
As it’s coming up to the season it would have to be strawberry and rhubarb first. But I would definitely have a go at the kiwi it looks delicious
Rhubarb and ginger
I would experiment with pineapple
I think I’d try apple and cinnamon! I’ve heard it’s lovely!! But kiwi and lime sounds like a great idea I’ve never heard of before now!

Raspberry jam, my favourite xx
I really had no idea such a piece of kit existed! I do make jam (freshly picked raspberry and blackcurrant is our favourite) but I really can’t be trusted to look after it whilst it bubbles, nor am I good at knowing when it is ready. This would encourage me to make even more jam. I would be forever in my husband’s good books. :-)
I’m the same! Such a short attention span that if I’m meant to be watching something on the hob, I usually end up wandering away and getting distracted with something else. This jam maker definitely solves that problem :)
Apricot jam because it is my favourite!
I might try and make blueberry jam. My boyfriend has made jams before, very yummy! Thank you for the lovely giveaway xx
Blueberry jam sounds absolutely amazing. And you’re very welcome! :)
Strawberry with my grandmas recipe it’s fab :o)
Bluberry
A great gadget, I want one

You guys are coming up with so many amazing ideas! I’ve never even heard of coconut jam!
oh wow how delightful i love kiwi and so do all 8 of my little ones, many a time have we been found wandering with spoon scooping the contents or freezing them into lemonade lollies for summer.
our favourite jams i would say definitely seem to vary, i love cherry and berries whereas some of the children enjoy lemons, limes and orange flavoured xx
Love the idea of freezing kiwi into lemonade lollies! :)
I’m going to be really boring and say raspberry jam – I use so much in my cakes that I love the thought of the whole product being homemade. I did chuckle at you making a jam using ingredients that you don’t like – That’s the sort of stuff I do just to challenge myself! I’ve never even thought about using a jam maker but will no doubt be scouring the internet for the rest of the morning to investigate their merits further.
Haha I do like a challenge ;) Luckily this one was successful! Your homemade cakes always look fantastic, I bet homemade jam would take them up another notch (if that’s possible!) :)
we have lots of plums and cherries on my boyfriend’s mum’s allotment. i’ve often wanted to have a go at jam with them but just not been brave enough. this would make me give it a go :)
if im lucky enough to win,id make blackberry jam.so yummy.x
id have to make a banana jam yum or a chilli
I think I would try a rhubarb jam – my fave fruit
Oh wow this does look delicious! Good thing you liked the finished product even if you don’t like kiwis xD I don’t think I’d ever successfully make jam by myself so I’d love a machine like this to help me out!
Haha yes otherwise my husband would have had to eat a few jars all on his own ;)
I’ve never made jam so I think I’d just start with bog standard strawberry!
Strawberry
now that is a tough choice mm i think it would have to be fig and apple
My kids love strawberry jam so we would attempt that first.
Wow, I never realized such a device existed; I too was under the impression that jam was a very labor intensive and messy task. I’m not the biggest jam fan, but I would definitely be all about making some fig jam if I were able to! My friend sent me some homemade apricot jam once, and I’d love to try that as well.

I think the first jam I would make is apricot jam. I actually have not kiwis at all in quite a while, so kiwi jam will definitely be second on the list!
This sounds delicious! If only we hadn’t just finished off all of our kiwis!
Not a fan of Kiwi but I found the Ball FreshTech Jam and Jelly Maker fascinating. Have to check it and do my own jam! Hehe.
I love jam but never ever heard of kiwi jam before
Kiwi jam….hmmm. Never thought of this combination before but I think I’m going to have to give it a go as I love kiwi
Kiwi and lime jam sounds delicious. I make my own jam, unless is something strange like rose petals. Homemade jam is so much better and I imagine with a jam maker is so much easier. My next batch of jam will be banana with cinnamon, unless I change my mind. :))
Oh wow I’ve never had banana jam!
raspberry!
I’m not a big fan of kiwi but I’d love to try this with other fruits. Plus, my boyfriend does actually love kiwi so I’m sure he’d love it! Perfect for summer! Kiwi jam is something you never think of! :D
Now we’re coming into summer strawberry & gooseberry jam would be lovely
That sounds like a really yummy recipe,i’d love to try that myself.
I’ve never thought to make jam out of kiwi before but it’s such a smart idea! It looks absolutely delicious :)
I actually love Kiwi’s so I would definitely try this.
I would also like to make a mango and ginger jam, maybe a little lemon in it to tart it up a bit.
This would be great to try a variety of recipes as you say it is easy to use ( I like easy ) haha
Mango and ginger sounds really interesting!!
I am trying to add ginger to a few things at the moment…. I can’t even remember why I started now but it does taste good. :)
I have never heard of kiwi jam! Sounds brilliant – will have to try x
I’m boring. I love strawberry jam so that would be first. Although it’s cherry season so who knows?
I like my jam to be quite sharp tasting so Kiwi and Lime totally has me and I am now wanting to try it x
I have never made kiwi jam but have had it in mind. I think I would make blueberry jam first as it’s one I’ve yet to make too!
Blueberry jam sounds fab! You should give this kiwi jam a go, you’re the jam queen!
I’m not a jam lover myself but this combination of flavours does sound good!
OOh If I won I would love to make a strawberry and elderflower jam, that would be fabulous for the spring and summer! xxx
I was a late arrival to the kiwifruit party – I think it was a combo of their texture and the hairiness of the skin that put me off for years – but now I quite like them. Have you tried the golden kiwis? Definitely my favourite :) Like the sound of the flavours in this jam!
Haha I know what you mean, they look a bit like hamsters!! I have had the golden ones, I prefer them to the green ones – a bit sweeter :)
What a fabulous machine. I think I would send the kids strawberry picking at our local pick your own and make some delicious strawberry jam.
I don’t like Kiwi fruits normally but I like the sound of this recipe.
Oooohh that sounds delicious! Is it good with cheese? I feel like it would be! H x
I don’t know but that sounds like a great idea!!
This sounds amazing, not heard of kiwi jam before, and how come I never knew one of these machines existed I need one in my life x
That Kiwi Jam looks totally delicious!
I absolutely adore kiwis and kiwi jam sounds absolutely amazing! I’m also partial to a good strawberry jam, nothing beats it :)
Ohhh I would love to try kiwi jam, how delicious does that sound and a jam and jelly maker I think I need one in my life. x
I would make strawberry jam and your kiwi Jam looks amazing.
I’ve always wanted to make jam! But it sounded too complicated so I never bothered. This machine looks awesome! And a little lime in anything is always good! Have entered the competition, I’d genuinely love one!
Same here, it’s not complicated at all with one of these babies though! :)
What a beautiful jam to make for your first ever homemade! Lovely combination, I have always adored both kiwi fruits and lime. I only started making jam myself in 2009 and was daunted by the idea only until I’d made my first batch and realised it was much easier than I’d thought. Before that I had memories of my mum making jam with strawberries we’d picked at the pick-your-own farm or blackberries we’d foraged in the countryside, but I’d never done the difficult bits. That said, I still get Pete to help me pour boiling hot jam into the jars as that’s the bit that remains scary for me!
You can’t beat British strawberries, especially pick-your-own! Bet those make amazing jam!
Ha, I don’t envy the kiwi peeling! Someone once taught me the teaspoon method that makes it fairly easy, but that pesky peel can still be so annoying. But I bet it is worth every second for this awesome jam! The machine looks fantastic.
I did use a spoon, but they were a little under-ripe, so it was tricky! Would be much quicker and easier with softer kiwis :)
What a great machine! That jam looks lovely. Unlike you, I LOVE kiwis, but I can’t eat them as I’m allergic :-(
Will have to stick to strawberry instead!
Gosh this sounds lovely! My mum always made the best jam and it’s never something I’ve ever been able to do as an adult. I need a machine like this!
It’d have to be blackcurrant for me – my favourite!! I love the idea of this gadget, so handy.
I love the thought of making jam but I don’t actually like it myself. I might make some for christmas presents in December x
Homemade jam would be such a lovely Christmas present!
I’ve made chutney but never jam. Love the idea of the jam maker though! I have to enter this comp
It would depend on what was in season, but quite probably peach and orange conserve.
Actually, I’m forever making jam without benefit of a machine, it’s dead easy. And provided you sterilise your jars (also dead easy – you just wash them, rinse them in hot water and put them in the oven on low just before you start making the jam, and they’re adequately sterile by the time you’re ready to pot up. Then you just put a waxed circle on top of the jam, and a wetted cellophane circle on top of the pot, which you secure with a rubber band – you buy these in packets from John Lewis or Lakeland, or, if you are lucky, from Tesco’s, but the smaller branches never have them. Called jam pot covers (well, duh!). Then your jams last forever, although they are nicest when fresh, which is why I only make small batches at a time. You can use frozen fruit, and I often do. My daughter saves the last strawberries that aren’t quite good enough to eat raw, and freezes them, then when she has enough she makes jam.
Love the idea of using frozen fruit, such a good tip :)
I would make strawberry using my homegrown strawberries
cherry jam :) xx
Ohhhhh soooo hard to choose which I’d make first! I’d love to give tart cherries a try or mango! My mouth is watering just thinking about it! Sadly, I to am incompetent in the jam making department.
Black Cherry!!! x
If I won this I would finally try making chilli jam!
I do LOVE cherry jam, but would have to deal with all the stones – maybe something easier! Kiwi jam sounds delicious.
It would have to be strawberry, had my first fresh English strawberry the other day :)
You really can’t beat British strawberries :)
This sounds delicious, im v partial to lime marmalade and I bet this similar in tanginess
Lime marmalade sounds brilliant!
