Homemade burger sauce
Have you ever wanted to have a recipe that everyone asks for when you serve it up? To be that person at family BBQs who’s being pestered for details of just how they made their contribution, scribbling it down on scraps of paper to hand out?
Make. This. Sauce. And you will be the envy of everybody.
The flavours in this sauce are insane. I love a good veggie burger, and I often use shop-bought ones like those you can see in the pictures (it’s true, I’m not really superwoman after all) – and this homemade burger sauce is a really easy way to turn your bog-standard burger into something really special.
It’s got some pretty strange ingredients, which just means that people will be all the more eager to get the recipe from you – I bet they’d never guess exactly what goes into it.
Start with some lettuce. Yes, this burger sauce contains lettuce. Bear with me.
Throw the lettuce in a high-powered blender, and add some pickled gherkins, ketchup, mayonnaise, and mustard.
All the flavours that should appear on a burger, in one easy smear.
This kind of burger sauce is often served at cheapy burger trucks, probably just so that they can make their burgers taste a bit like vegetables without actually having to spend money on fresh veg (I’m sure they don’t make their own sauce). But, don’t let that put you off! This burger sauce is tasty and tangy, and smooth and creamy, all at the same time, and it wouldn’t be out of place even on the most gourmet burger.
You can add some extra salad as well if you want, like I did – the burger sauce gives all the flavour you need, but I do like a little bit of crunch on a burger too.
Do you have a recipe that everyone’s always asking for?

I can almost imagine the taste of it now, I bet it is amazing! Definitely going to make this for our next barbie and use it in veggie burgers etc.
I’m not a fan of burgers but my boys are, might try this
YUM!!!! Can’t wait to try this this summer!
This sounds delicious and I can’t wait to try it- the lettuce is such an unusual ingredient (to me, anyway). I wondered how long this sauce keeps in the fridge. I’d assume the mayo/mustard/ketchup/gherkin ingredients would keep well, but wondered if the addition of lettuce makes things get ooky faster.
Thanks Stephanie! To be honest it doesn’t last very long in my house, purely because we eat it all within a couple of days haha ;) I guess I’d say it’ll keep for 3 days to be on the safe side, but if you wanted a version you could store for longer, you could always skip the lettuce :)
I am a big burger sauce fan, there is something very addictive about it. Yours sounds great, also you haven’t added any of the nasties that shop bought sauce have. I also love to make this sauce and I think it’s the gherkins I love most about it!
Fabulous idea Becca which I must try in my new blender – could really munch into one right now and I’ve only just had breakfast, fab photos:-)
Thanks so much Camilla! :)
Nice idea Becca. Stumbled, tweeted and shared on the Froothie UK facebook page :)
Thanks Jac!
looks absolutely delicious!

In the photos for the Burger Sauce, what kind of burger bun is that, and where did you buy it, or did you make? It looks hale and hearty, able to hold up to whatever kind of tonnage you want to pile in there! All that, while at the same time, looking ‘biscuity’ on the top!! Thanking you in advance for your time!
Hi Sherry Ann, I’m afraid I didn’t make the bun myself. It’s just one I bought from the bakery section of the supermarket, they’re pretty common here in the UK. They’re similar to tiger bread (which I think is called Dutch crunch in other countries?) but in roll form :)
Thank you for this recipie. I like making homemade food (where possible) as one knows what goes into making it.
Again many thanks Becca
You’re welcome Deirdre, hope you like it! :)
