Homemade burger sauce - take this to a family BBQ, and everyone will want the recipe!

Have you ever wanted to have a recipe that everyone asks for when you serve it up? To be that person at family BBQs who's being pestered for details of just how they made their contribution, scribbling it down on scraps of paper to hand out?

Make. This. Sauce. And you will be the envy of everybody.

Homemade burger sauce - take this to a family BBQ, and everyone will want the recipe!

The flavours in this sauce are insane. I love a good veggie burger, and I often use shop-bought ones like those you can see in the pictures (it's true, I'm not really superwoman after all) - and this homemade burger sauce is a really easy way to turn your bog-standard burger into something really special.

It's got some pretty strange ingredients, which just means that people will be all the more eager to get the recipe from you - I bet they'd never guess exactly what goes into it.

Homemade burger sauce - take this to a family BBQ, and everyone will want the recipe!

Start with some lettuce. Yes, this burger sauce contains lettuce. Bear with me.

Throw the lettuce in a high-powered blender, and add some pickled gherkins, ketchup, mayonnaise, and mustard.

All the flavours that should appear on a burger, in one easy smear.

This kind of burger sauce is often served at cheapy burger trucks, probably just so that they can make their burgers taste a bit like vegetables without actually having to spend money on fresh veg (I'm sure they don't make their own sauce). But, don't let that put you off! This burger sauce is tasty and tangy, and smooth and creamy, all at the same time, and it wouldn't be out of place even on the most gourmet burger.

You can add some extra salad as well if you want, like I did - the burger sauce gives all the flavour you need, but I do like a little bit of crunch on a burger too.

Do you have a recipe that everyone's always asking for?

When the recipe says yellow mustard, does that mean the sweet American style mustard? (just checking!)

Generally it's advised to keep food for no longer than 3 days. I'd personally push it to 4 or maybe even 5, but no longer than that :)

This sounds like a great recipe! I'd probably only use one pickled gherkin, but the mix of vegetables and condiments sounds like it would make an amazing sauce. I'll try this recipe out next time I have a burger. Thanks for the article!

OK, I'm not a woman, but I did most of the cooking even before the wife left me. Just me and my boy now, and really appreciate this recipe as I hate using pre-made stuff. I can get my boy to eat a veggie-burger, that's a win!

Lovely recipe, definitely much healthier than store bought sauces... would make great addition to grilled veggies or as a dip ;)

Wow, this looks EPIC! I am definitely trying this next time we have burgers. My kids pick lettuce out of everything so it would be a great way to get some extra veg into them too!

I actually hadn't thought of that angle but you're right, this sauce is great for kids who won't have salad on their burgers!

This sounds great! Just like the sauces you get from burger joints. I have a sauce that I make all the time that has lettuce in it. Makes for a pretty sauce! Thanks for the recipe. And, yep, though I'd love to make my own veggie patties all the time, those frozen ones are just too easy!

Hi, I'm Becca! I've been a vegetarian for over 25 years, and unlike most of my other childhood pursuits, I actually stuck with it! I love cooking vegetarian food that's full of flavour, but doesn't take a lot of effort to make.
